2009 US OPEN

The 2009 kicks off in a few hours at the monster Bethpage Black Golf course in Long Island NY.

Last time the open was here in 2002 Tiger won (as he usually does) and after 72 holes he was the only player under par at -3.

With wind and rain forecast for the next four days we may well see players struggle again.

Tiger won last year on 1 leg, now after having surgery to give him a new and improved bionic leg, he is back with 2 good legs and he demonstrated the other week in the memorial that he has lost nothing, his final round 65 was sublime.

Most golf conversations start and finish with tiger, so in the middle i will add some filling.

Phil Mikelson - always consistent, always in contention he will be a sentimental favourite after it was announced last month his wife has breast cancer - those things can get to a player.

Geoff Ogilvy - Great year so far and i think Tiger aside he has to be the next hardest to beat if he continues the way he has been playing - should be top 5.

Sergio Garcia - hits it far enough and straight enough to be a threat here. Needs to put well to be in contention - if he can get that to click can be in the leading group

Angel Carbrera - Former US open winner, this years Masters winner, playing well, hits it a long way and putts well. Sure to be in contention.

Jim Furyk - 2nd to Tiger in the Memorial, played well this year but it has been a while between wins. If it was a horse race he has the good form behind the best horse. But its not a horse race. Its walking around hitting a small ball into a small hole. Both sports do feature lots of grass though?

Last year Tiger took a few play off holes to get past world 158 Rocco Mediate. There will no doubt be a few bolters that are up the leader board when the cut comes and good luck to them surviving the pressure.

But like i said, most golf conversations start and finish with Tiger - he plays the way he did the final 2 days at memorial - he wins.
